CENTER FOR ADAPTIVE LEARNING
A Key to Individual Potential for Adults with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities |
|
CAL History & Overview
The Center for Adaptive Learning (CAL), founded 1988, is an educational program and residential, not for profit 501(c) (3), non-sectarian, California Corporation committed to facilitating growth and achievement, through continuous education and therapeutic support, in the lives of adults challenged with neurodevelopmental disabilities - including Autism Spectrum Disorders. The clients have diagnoses such as High Functioning Autism, Aspergers Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorders, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).
Most often these challenges render an individual unable to live independently and result in full reliance on their immediate family members for their entire life. CAL has demonstrated long term success with its clients, beginning with the principle that adults leave the parental home. CAL provides continuous education, training, and support related to four critical, inter-connected, elements of life to achieve and sustain their self reliance:
· Health and Living Skills: Nutrition, meal planning, grocery shopping, personal hygiene, home maintenance, exercise, medical advocacy and medication management. · Emotional Stability: Individual and group counseling, relationship management (peers, employer, significant other, and family), supportive management related to mild depression, anxiety and self-esteem. · Socialization Skills: Skills needed to engage in employment, peer and family relationships, development of personal interests, leisure time management, and successful inclusion in the community. · Vocational Development: Skill development, job readiness education, job development, job matching and on-the-job follow up and support.
